Cats combine strength, grace, and intelligence to a superlative degree. You can find a cat in pretty much every city and in many homes. That said, having a cat in your home is very different! These critters can be stubborn little guys and can pose a big challenge to understanding all their little nuances.
Small places are spots cats love to get into. If they have to wear a collar then there may be a risk because your cat could end up getting stuck. The advantage to a breakaway type collar is that if enough pressure is put on it, it will just let go rather than strangle the cat. Your cat can preserve a few of his nine lives with this.
Microchips are an increasingly popular form of pet protection. Even an indoor cat could someday jump through an open window. Cats can get out of a collar or, worse, have that collar choke them to death. Your important information can all fit nicely on a rice grain sized microchip. Nearly every vet and shelter owns a scanner which can read a microchip, and since they’re implanted, there isn’t a risk of the chip falling out or getting lost.
Don’t allow your cat become bored. They need exercise and they get it through play. Unfortunately there are too many cat owners who don’t properly exercise their cats. A lack of stimulation can lead to psychological or medical problems for your cat, including depression, compulsive disorders, and chronic misbehavior. Give them toys and things to do. Give them a cat tree to play with.
Most cats are nocturnal. Your cat will probably be very active during the night. If you are having a hard time sleeping because of your cats, close the door. This will prevent them from entering your sleeping space and awakening you.
Put the litter box in an ideal location. The box should be out of the high traffic areas and a good distance from where your cat eats. To prevent a strong stench, be sure this space is well-ventilated. Both you and your pet will appreciate that.
Male felines tend to have a build-up of crystals that present in the urine, so you need to avoid this with proper nutrition. Your cat will experience considerable pain when he has to pass these crystals, and it’s not an easy (or cheap) problem for your veterinarian to fix. Food with a low magnesium content will help. Consult the ingredient list. Products including fish have a higher magnesium content then poultry based products.
When your cat accompanies you on a trip, remember to consider the health of their ears. You may love belting out your favorite tunes as you drive on the freeway, but your cat probably enjoys softer sounds. If your cat seems upset or agitated, turn down the music and speak calmly to him.
Little kids shouldn’t be left alone near cats. Spend time instructing your children on cat care. The objective is to be as gentle as possible with your cat. A cat’s bones can be quite fragile and they need to be treated gently.
Don’t let your cat go outside. Your cat might not be safe outside. The cat can get fleas or something much worse. There is the possibility they may get injured by another animal, even people and cars too. When your cats go outside, keep an eye out to make sure they do not wander too far away.
Use care if you have kids and a cat. This is especially true if your child is less than five years old. These children just do not possess the maturity to handle a kitten. They aren’t aware of the danger that they can cause to it. Once the child is older and more mature, decide if they are ready for the responsibility of handling animals.
Talk to others when you have a problem with your cat. You can solve most problems by yourself, but you might benefit from the experience of others. Use the Internet to share tips with other cat owners and ask your questions or talk with your neighbors, friends or veterinarian.
You should install a small drinking fountain for your cat. A cat will always drink from running water if possible. Cats usually like to drink from a water stream. In fact, many cats like to drink from a running faucet instead of drinking from their water bowls. A fountain will give them the same effect, and it is more environmentally friendly.
If your cat begins defecating or urinating too frequently, it’s time to see the vet. Many cats develop these behaviors in response to a health problem, such as urinary tract infections. Affordable antibiotics can quickly resolve the problem.
Take note if the cat ceases using its litter box. There are a number of health conditions that can make your kitty urinate and go to the bathroom in places other than the litter box. Kidney or bladder infections may be the reason. If your pet stops using the litter box then see your veterinarian.
Your cat should stay inside most of the time, and when it’s outside, you should ensure it remains close to home. Cats who live indoors live longer and are healthier than outdoor cats. While cats can get their exercise roaming the neighborhood and squaring off against other cats, they can also get diseases and injuries this way. Vigorous indoor play with an owner is a preferable way to get exercise.
Eventually, you’ll get the hang of outsmarting your cat. In a short time, they will understand where they should be and what they need to avoid. They may not be as easy to train as a dog, but cats can be trained to be well-mannered, if not always obedient.
