Older cats will appreciate a heated bed; you can use a heated tile to create one! You should heat a terra cotta tile with your oven, at about 200 degrees, for around fifteen minutes. Put the tile inside a towel and place it under the cat’s bedding. If necessary, repeat this every few hours.

You may want to have a microchip put into your car. Even indoor cats can decide to run away at a moment’s notice, escaping through an open window. A collar and identification tags can help bring your pet back to you. But experts point out that collars that do not snap apart quickly if your cat gets it caught on a branch or even a bush can accidentally strangle your cat. A microchip, on the other hand, is inserted near your cat’s shoulder blades, takes only a second to do, and all of your current contact info can be read through the chip. Every shelter and most veterinarian offices have microchip scanners that can read the chips, and best of all, they chips can’t be lost.

Don’t allow your cat become bored. Cats need play and exercise. Too many cat owners forget this simple fact. A lack of stimulation can lead to psychological or medical problems for your cat, including depression, compulsive disorders, and chronic misbehavior. Make sure you give them lots of toys and room to play. Indoor cats will appreciate having a structure they can climb on or a dedicated scratching post.

Cat Outside

If you want to let your cat outside, think again. It can be unsafe. Your cat could get fleas or even worse parasites. Cars, people, or animals could hurt your beloved pet. If you allow your cat outside, make sure you live in a reasonably safe area.

Think twice before leaving a child alone with a kitten. Children under 5 years of age should not be alone with the pet. A child of that age doesn’t realize when they are being too rough with a pet. When they mature, they can spend alone time with the kitty.

You cat needs to get used to being in a carrier. Cats can’t be punished like dogs. They prefer encouragement instead. Place a loved blanket and favorite toy into a carrier and then leave the door open. Make sure it’s in an area that the cat frequents. In time, the cat will head inside and be happy. This will make getting the cat inside easier later.

Scratching Post

Don’t throw away your cat’s old scratching post. It may not look as nice, but cats love a scratching post with some wear and tear. If you throw it away too soon, that cat may look to your furniture for some clawing while it slowly breaks in a new scratching post.

Feed your cat high-quality cat food. Your cat needs a lot of protein from meat, so read the labels before you choose a food. Avoid foods like corn or other items without protein. Cats are naturally carnivorous. If you want to keep them healthy and happy, you need to feed them plenty of animal protein.

Long-haired cats require more care than their short-haired comrades. That hair will truly get everywhere! Don’t adopt a cat with long fur unless you’re sure you can handle the extra cleaning. There will be hairball issues as well.

If your cat is ready to give birth, give her an area to do it in that has plenty of space. It will take about three to four hours for all of the kittens to come out, so be patient. A declawed cat should not be outdoors. Cats without claws cannot stand up for themselves if they encounter another animal. The result could be injuries or death. Only declaw your cat if you are serious about keeping them indoors. Even so, you will only want to get the claws up front removed. Never remove the claws from the back, as these are not harmful to your stuff.

Be on the lookout for panting in cats. Dogs normally pant on a regular basis. Panting can be an indicator of health problems in your cat. It is wise to consult your vet, especially if the cat has past respiratory problems.
